A few years ago, I blind bought a cheapo Collection called “The Exploitation Cinema Collection” by BCI/Eclipse for 10 bucks. Now, I don’t usually expect much from these “Collection” sets. I tend to shun companies like Mill Creek because the quality of the films are so poor, its laughable. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen good rips of VHS tapes and I’ve seen bad rips. A lot of Mill Creek’s stuff are beyond terrible. Thankfully, BCI has decent enough quality to be presentable. I’m done ranting now. The only film that I originally heard about was Don’t Answer the Phone (Review to come soon). So years later, I decided to crack the set open again and this time I watched Black Candles.
And boy did I feel dirty afterwards.
A woman and her husband travel to England to investigate her brother’s mysterious death and they fall into the hands of a bunch of Satanists.
The Exploitation Cinema Collection was a Best Buy exclusive, which packed all the original “Welcome to the Grindhouse” series released by BCI. Mill Creek Entertainment has now release these titles in their Drive in Cult Classics line. So you can still find them. I believe their Drive-In Cult Classics – 32 Movie Set can be found on amazon still.
BCI delivers us a widescreen edition of the film, which seems to be accurate to the original aspect ratio of 1.85.1 but sadly its non-anamorphic. Picture is a little blurry and is definately a VHS rip. Worst thing to say about this is the audio is very muffled. I remember hearing something about goat semen, but couldn’t make it all out. That’s probably for the better.
What would a sleaze movie be without a little beastiality. Honestly, I was shocked when I saw the girl being pleasured in the barn. Then the goat walked in and I just had to nod my hand in shame. The actual goat scenes were obviously a man in a goat costume but it doesn’t get any lower than that.
The movie is slow and even the sex scenes are a bore to watch. Lots of chin biting though, not sure what is up with that. If you enjoy wall to wall softcore sex scenes, you’ll probably like Black Candles. A movie so bad, that the director himself disowns it.
